Aistear- The Post Office

We had a wonderful time learning about the post office in Aistear during the month of November. Special thanks to Mary of An Post in Sixmilebridge who visited our classroom to talk to the Junior Infants.  The photographs below show all of the great activities each team was a part of in the different Aistear areas – role-play, creative, construction, fine-motor and small world. 

We were very busy during Aistear for Halloween. Our role play area was turned into a fancy dress shop. We began our first week reading the book ‘Room on the Broom’. At the sand area we  searched for Room on the broom  cards and sorted them into their correct sets. At the cutting area we carefully cut out skeletons, spooky Halloween pumpkins and created five little pumpkin scenes. We also sequenced the nursery rhyme Incy Wincy Spider. We made masks, spooky ghosts and painted pumpkins at the art area. We built spooky witches houses, cafes and brooms from twigs. We made bat wings, witches hats, spiders and pumpkin faces with playdough. We really enjoyed this theme. 

During maths stations the children reinforce their learning through a variety of fun activities. The activities included sorting sets by colour, shape and by object. We made sets and included an odd one out object. We explored long and short, big, medium and small. We compared sets of objects and explored sets that had more and less objects. We also created patterns using a variety of concrete materials. Maths stations work really well for this class and they absolutely love maths as they are learning but having fun at the same time. We are working so well with our partners as well.

​We have set up twitter accounts for the junior infant classes. We hope that our tweets will keep parents / guardians informed of our classroom activities. The activities can be discussed with the children and parents / guardians may find opportunities to extend the learning also.

Junior Infants have trainers coming to the school every Thursday teaching us hurling skills. We are learning lots of new skills and having great fun at the same time. We are getting better as each week goes on. Hopefully we'll wear the blue and gold of Clare someday!! Have a look and see what you think.

On Wednesday 28th of January, the Junior Infants invited their Grandparents in to see their classrooms and celebrate Grandparent's Day. The children had lots of fun on the day, singing songs and saying their very special prayer for their Grandparents. We had lots of lovely Grandparents join us on the day, all of whom we were delighted to see! As you can see from our photographs there are lots of fabulous smiles!! A very big thank you to the Grandparents for making the effort to join us and a huge thank you to the Junior Infants for behaving so well and putting in such effort!!!

On Wednesday 28th January as part of Catholic School’s week we celebrated Grandparents Day in the Junior Infant classrooms. We sang songs and recited rhymes for all the grandparents who visited us. The children presented their grandparents with a special prayer that they had learnt for this celebration.
Afterwards the grandparents enjoyed refreshments kindly supplied by the Parents Association. It was a lovely occasion enjoyed by all and we would like to thank everyone who helped to make the day so special.
