On Tuesday the 24/3/15 Clare had a soccer tournament in Leeds Road.
The people in Mr. Keane’s and Mr. Kilcoyne’s class on the team were Ben Dalton, Leon Kelly, Conor Maxwell, Gearoid Casey, Shane Hennessy, Eoin Cadaghan, Jack Flynn and Dylan Downes were on the team. The starting team was Ben Dalton in goals, Conor Maxwell and Leon Kelly in defence, Eoin Cadaghan was in midfield and Dylan Downes was in the striker position. We brought subs in and out of play. In total there was eight players on the team. In the first game we won 4-0, in the second game the score was 6-1. We played a couple more games and won them all by a few goals. Our best game was when we won 13-1. In the final we were playing against Newmarket on Fergus and we won 5-1, this meant we won the Clare tournament and we were the champions!!! Four weeks after the tournament on Tuesday the 28/4/15 we went to Leeds Road again for the Munster soccer tournament. Sadly we did not win we lost our first 2 games 4-0 and we lost our last game 2-1. For the Munster finals our goalkeeper Ben Dalton McSherry was injured so Eli Murphy O’Sullivan went into goals for us and pulled off some tremendous saves. It was great fun and we are delighted to be county champs!!! In March the girls competed in the Cumann na mBunscoil mini sevens outdoor Blitz held in Broadford. They played Clonlara in the first game and were narrowly defeated after a great comeback in the second half. This match was followed by a meeting with Killaloe. It was a competitive match and the St Finnachta’s team emerged victorious. All seventeen members of the panel participated in the games and enjoyed the experience. We are now looking forward to the Cumann na mBunscoil Championship after Easter.

The eight students had qualified out of their classes by out-spelling everyone in their class and they were then entered in the school final to see who would be the Sixmilebridge spelling bee champion. The pupils were Luke O Halloran, Cian Fawl, Josh Enright, Ben Shires, Scott Kirkland, Colin Kelly and Caoilfhionn Nic Giolla Cearra. Everyone was great but in the end it came down to Colin Kelly and Caoilfhionn Nic Giolla Cearra and after a long head to head Colin Kelly was victorious. Colin will now go forward to represent the school in the Clare county final in Newmarket on Wednesday March 25th. Best of luck Colin!! The changes in this week's weather have been extraordinary but the arrival of snow on Monday created great excitment.
The Four Musketeers
A Sixmilebridge N.S. quiz team of 6th class pupils Sinead Cahill, Luke O’ Halloran, Colin Kelly and Will Fitzpatrick took part in the Avonmore Super Schools Quiz on Clare F.M. The quiz was recorded in the school by Breakfast Show host Ciara Revins. They were asked their names and the class gave them a big cheer. They were then asked ten general knowledge questions and had ninety seconds to complete them. Answering all ten questions in a time of fifty-nine seconds (the fastest time in the history of the quiz) the anxious team waited nervously for their score. Ciara confirmed that they had scored an amazing ten out of ten. Then six weeks later, after thirty-six other schools had been played on the Breakfast Show Ciara came back with some news. To Luke O’Halloran’s surprise she revealed that they had won. The team celebrated joyously with lollipops courtesy of Ciara. On December the 18th Ciara presented them with the winner’s cup. Congratulations to Cian Fawl in 4th class who was selected to represent Clare in the Munster Inter-schools Handball Tournament in Nenagh last weekend. Cian was joined on the team by other boys from schools around the county. This is the second year that Cian has been selected on the Clare Handball Team. Well done Cian.
SKYDOME On the 21/11/14, all classes from 4th to 6th went to the GAA hall. We met a man named Olly and he led us into an enormous air-locked dome. There was a projector on a little table in the centre of the dome and we all sat cross-legged around it. He turned on the projector with a remote-control. The projector showed images on the ceiling of the dome. It showed the current time and date and the sun setting. After that, he talked about stars and constellations for a while. The constellations he showed us included Orion, Ursa Major and Pegasus. He also showed us the North Star. We learned that; · The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. · The North Star is the only star that doesn’t move. Not even a muscle! · That on a very clear night you can actually see Jupiter without a telescope. · There is around 90 constellations such as Leo, Scorpio and Gemini. U.L. Science Magic Show
On 13/11/2014 5th and 6th class teachers all went on a bus trip to the U.L. complex in Co. Limerick. When we arrived we had to wait in a lobby for them to get all set up and get all the gear together. When we got inside we sat in our rows, they introduced themselves to everyone, then called up five volunteers one of which was Mathew Hurley. First they dipped their hands in water, they also had a tub that they put fairy washing up liquid mixed with water and hydrogen peroxide that they picked up in their hands and asked each volunteer to light it on fire once each. The water acted as an insulator and the scientists hand wasn’t burned. After that cooled down, they got all set up for the next piece of magic. This involved a large drum of liquid nitrogen (LN) and they poured it down a large funnel, they poured in fairy washing up liquid down the large funnel and then poured in around a half litre of water. The LN bubbled over the top and seeped down the sides in went in to a kind of foam that was very cold, so cold that they had to move the mat it was on to get rid of it. For the last stunt they asked if anybody had any paper money, one boy raised his hand and they came down and he gave them the money it was a €10 note. She brought it up to the stage dipped it in the LN. She pulled out a gas lighter and set it on fire the little boy nearly cried but soon found out the gas protected the paper. He then got his money back. The school would like to thank U.L. for inviting the school into witness a truly wonderful display. By James Egan. This year in St. Finnachta’s N.S. we did the annual Shoebox Appeal. It was another great success. It is done every year throughout the world. Our Irish one is based in Dublin and is called called Team Hope. The Shoeboxes are made for all the children in Africa, where they can’t afford anything for Christmas. Our school always donates to Team Hope. This year we donated two hundred and thirteen Shoeboxes. That’s our school’s biggest record yet! Every year the number of Shoeboxes that are donated increases. Our school has been donating Shoeboxes for ten years! The children in St. Finnachta’s N.S. love making Shoeboxes, because they know if they didn’t donate the Shoeboxes the children in poorer parts of the world wouldn’t get anything for Christmas. You can only put suitable stuff in the Shoeboxes and you can’t put anything with an expiry date. Well done to all pupils who participated in the Cross Country Inter-Schools Championship Finals this week. The races took place at the Lees Road Sports Complex in Ennis. In the U. 8 Boys' Competition the school was represented by Michael Morey (4th place overall & inter-provincial team medal), John Paul O' Donoghue and Matthew O' Halloran. Rosie Mai Ashley took part in the Girls' Final and in the over 10 Competition Leon Kelly (10th place overall and inter-provincial medal) and Dylan Downes (inter-provincial medal) also did very well. Well done everyone and to all other pupils who participated in the earlier stage of the inter-schools cross country heats. Thirty three athletes competed in the East Clare Cross Country Finals at Lees Road, Ennis. Ms. Collins, Ms. Tuohy and Ms. Shalloo were very proud of all their athletes. They reported that a wonderful day was had; the sun shone brightly, the children behaved superbly and they made a great name for themselves on the athletics field. In total seven medals were brought back to our school and everybody involved really enjoyed the day! We are glad to announce that we have achieved our goal and got the Biodiversity Flag! Joan Tarmey came to the school to examine the work the greens schools did over the year. We passed the test!! The green schools ceremony was held on the 24/10/2014. We were joined by John Crowe the major of Clare, John Corbett and Rita Higgins. Mr Heagney started off with a speech to acknowledge the work the green schools committee. Aobha Ward Murphy spoke about the committees trip to Seed Savers, Saoirse Downes then spoke about what the committee had been doing all year, and to finish it off John Crowe acknowledged the schools work before raising the flag with two 5th class members. Ms Touhy and the school choir sang the anthem while they raised the flag! The committee put a lot of effort into learning about biodiversity, but had a lot of fun too. Ard Scoil Rís Hurling Tournament
On Saturday 4th of October a Sixmilebridge N.S team of Conor Maxwell, Conor Morey, Leon Kelly, Matthew Hurley, Luke Keogh, Luke O’ Halloran, Dylan Downes, Evan Murphy, Colin Kelly, Alex Carmello O’ Donnell, Eli Murphy O’ Sullivan, Eoin Morby, James Egan, Will Fitzpatrick, Mark Cleary and Óran O’ Reilly travelled to Ard Scoil Rís for a nine a side hurling tournament. They got ready for their first match and went out to play Crecoora N.S. Sixmilebridge got a few early goals with great skill and showed everyone that they were there to compete. They drove them out of the game in the second half and won it by a great difference. In the second game they played Christ the King N.S, they were a great side and caused a lot of problems for the bridge team in the first half but the bridge held on and in the second half, although they were losing, they held on and won the game by a goal. They had a two hour break before their next match. In the semi- final they played Clonlara N.S, they were a great side but they were no match for the strength of the great bridge team. It was a great final with great skill and determination from both teams but it wasn’t Shountrade N.S. Adare’s day and Sixmilebridge came out on top. There was immense cheering when Leon Kelly lifted up the cup for the first time in the school’s history. Leon was then announced as the player of the tournament!!! |
