4th Class really enjoyed the many activities which were part of Book Week particularly a Shared Reading session with Senior Infants. Fourth class created their very own anemometer and learned lots of interesting things about wind. Luckily the wind wasn't too strong when we tested out our wind gauge!!
With Operation Transformation hitting the headlines, we decided to follow the Fit at School, Fit Forever plan. These lessons include Cardi-Respiratory Fitness, Muscles and Bone Health, Flexibility, Speed and Agility, Fundamental Movement Skills and most importantly we had lots of fun!! We looked at India as a country with all its customs and cultures. We looked at India through the lens of a camera- a filo fax of images taken from everyday life in India. We also studied aspects of Indian Art. We watched a powerpoint and a video based on 'Rangoli Patterns' and we created our own using lots of bright colours. We also looked at the aspect of 'Henna Tattoos' a regular sight on brides in preparation of marriages in India. We created our own using a cardboard template of a hand and outliner black paint. In Science we learned that electricity travels in a circuit. We were aiming to prove this point with our own circuits. By trial and error we practiced making circuits using batteries, wire, tape and a little light bulb. 'Let there be light!' The class have begun writing their penpal letters to their new penpals in California. These American friends are being taught this year by their former teacher Mr.Corbett. They will write three letters between now and June and receive correspondences also. They will learn about life in America and in turn they will learn about our lives in Ireland. We focused several lessons on learning about the heritage and customs of the Maoris in New Zealand and about the country itself. This theme was brought across curricular areas. In History we learned about the heritage of the native settlers to New Zealand- 'The Maoris', in Geography we uncovered key facts about New Zealand and their population, langauges, flag, currency..etc, in PE, we learned the war dance of the Haka, in Music we learned the words of the Haka, in Art we created 'Ta Moko'- Maori Facial Tattoos on plastic masks and finally in English we wrote postcards homes to our families in Ireland detailing all the activities/places we went to on "Our Trip to New Zealand". Here are some pictures from our New Zealand/Maori Displays. |
